Which German level do you need? A1–C1 mapped to every program
“Learn German” is not a plan. Every downstream program needs a specific level from a specific exam board, and getting either wrong wastes months. Here's the quick map.
Level by program
- Ausbildung: B1 minimum (B2 preferred by many healthcare employers).
- German-taught Bachelor's: B2/C1.
- Medical PG: C1 medical German plus the Fachsprachprüfung (FSP).
- Nursing: B1 → B2 (both pathways qualify; the route just differs).
- English-taught Master's: often no German needed for the course itself, though B1 helps with daily life.
Which exam board?
Goethe-Institut, TestDaF, telc and ÖSD are all internationally recognised. Goethe has the broadest recognition; telc and ÖSD are often more affordable and common for vocational routes; TestDaF is priced per full exam and is much cheaper in India (~€110) than in Germany (~€210).
Tip: sit your exam in India before you travel where the board allows it — same certificate, a fraction of the cost.
