Part-time work rules for international students in Germany

Working part-time is a normal part of student life in Germany — and it's built into the visa rules.

How much you can work

  • International students can work 140 full days or 280 half days per year without separate work-permit approval.
  • On-campus and student-assistant (HiWi) roles are popular and flexible around lectures.
  • During semester breaks there's more room to work full days.

What it means for your budget

Part-time earnings can cover a meaningful share of living costs, but treat them as a top-up — not your primary funding. The blocked account exists precisely so your studies don't depend on finding work.

Tip: minor (Werkstudent-style) roles related to your field also build the local experience that matters for the post-study job-search visa.
