Nursing in Germany with B1 vs B2: which pathway is faster?

If you're a GNM, Post Basic B.Sc or B.Sc nurse, you can move to Germany on either a B1 or a B2 certificate. Both pathways end at the same place — full RN status, full RN salary and a PR route. Here's how they differ.

The B1 pathway

  • Contract from a German employer in ~3 weeks.
  • Complete mandatory B2 training in Germany (~4 months) while you live and earn there.
  • Then focused Kenntnisprüfung (KP) preparation.

The B2 pathway (up to 4 months faster)

  • Contract secured while you're still in India (~45 days).
  • No fresh B2 exam in Germany — just a practical assessment by German trainers on arrival.
  • Direct entry to KP prep, which is where the B2 route saves time.

What you'll earn

During the recognition (Anerkennung) phase you earn roughly €2,300–2,900 gross/month; as a fully Registered Nurse, around €3,000–3,800+ depending on employer, region and pay scale (TVöD-P / AVR). Recognition itself typically takes 90–120 days, running in parallel with your visa.

Bottom line: if you already have B2, you'll usually reach registration faster — but B1 is a completely valid start, and you finish your B2 in Germany while already earning.
