Choosing the wrong exam board can cost you months. Here's how the four recognised boards actually differ.

The quick comparison

  • Goethe-Institut — broadest global recognition; accepted for all visa types.
  • telc / ÖSD — strong recognition and often more affordable, popular for Ausbildung and vocational routes.
  • TestDaF — academic focus, priced per full exam; much cheaper in India (~€110) than in Germany (~€210).

How to choose

Match the board to your target: academic/Bachelor's routes often prefer Goethe or TestDaF; Ausbildung leans telc or ÖSD; Medical PG needs C1 medical German plus the FSP. When in doubt, Goethe is the safest all-rounder.

And wherever the board allows it, sit the exam in India before you travel — the certificate is identical and the cost is far lower.
