Blocked account (Sperrkonto) for Germany, explained for 2026

The blocked account is the single biggest number in your visa file — and the most misunderstood. It is not a fee. It's proof of funds that returns to you.

The 2026 numbers

  • €992 per month × 12 = €11,904 for the year.
  • Same requirement in every state, regardless of tuition.
  • Released to you monthly (~€992) after you arrive in Germany.

How it works

You open a Sperrkonto (with providers recognised by the German mission), deposit the required amount, and receive confirmation for your visa application. Once you're in Germany and registered, the account unblocks a fixed monthly amount into your regular account for living costs.

Plan the funding early: arranging the transfer and confirmation can take a couple of weeks, and your visa appointment depends on it.
